Measuring Drag and Visualizing Flow Patterns Around a Model Vehicle
2019

A model vehicle was designed with specified dimensions and the goal of minimizing drag as part of an undergraduate Engineering Measurements course project. The effect of drag on the wedge-shape model was measured for different flow velocities and compared to a control model. Models were tested in a wind tunnel by connecting a sensor that measures the reactive force due to drag.

  • Model was first designed by hand drawings, then with Fusion 360 & Solidworks, and prototyped with styrofoam

  • Vehicle was constructed out of 6 layers of 5mm laser-cut wood glued together and sanded down

  • Final model vehicle design was modified to achieve desired weight of 50 g
